I am doing some research for Camden Tour Guides Association and Somers Town History Club, into the history of an old boxing/wrestling venue, the Chalton (sometimes Euston) ring. For a London Borough that has had its history well studied, we are short of information about this place. And the accounts I am getting from some of the older oldest inhabitants of Somers Town contradict (flimsy so far) written evidence of even where it was. The Chalton Ring appears in wrestling and boxing websites mainly in lists of bouts of many fighters’ bouts, and so far following up on their names has not produced much extra information. I have found a poster from a 1933 wresting evening (Stan Rothwell v Sailor Read, Percy Smart v Henri Letailleur. Billy Wood v Samson Croft and — best till last — Mad Maurice v Doulos the Turk) which says the ring is at Kings Cross end of Euston Road, entrance in Chalton Street. Ladies (accompanied by gentleman) admitted free. www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utlsc/00009/lsc-00009.htmlPassing reference here: theantonineitineraries.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/nina-hamnett-and-boxing.htmlAnd a picture that might (or, more probably, might not) be the actual ring: collage.cityoflondon.gov.uk/view-item?i=109763&WINID=1496679362265Any folklore, memories, and other thoughts welcome.
