Hi my grandad Joe Boswell used to box out of Liverpool stadium in the 1920s, he originated from Chester but lived in blackburn. He was trained by his father in law, my great granddad Jack strahan. He had two bouts against jack hood who went onto be the European welterweight champion, the first bout he retired due to knocking his thumb out. During the economic recession he would also look to earn money from illegal bare knuckle fights.

Norman Snow was a great boxer from Northampton. My grandfather was Jim Woolard (Wellard). He and Norman Snow you to train and spar together for many years. Neither would fight each other though.

My great grandfather, who I grew up hearing stories about from my grandmother, was a boxer in Edinburgh, sometime before 1910. He emigrated from Riga, escaping the Pogroms with his family. He had a handlebar mustache which he enjoyed sitting by the fire and waxing. He married out of his faith and was disowned by his Orthodox Jewish family, though he did quite well on his own. He had six children with his wife Jean, and earned his British citizenship after serving in France in WW1 changing his name legally from Mayer Rosenoff to Harry Meyers. Thus I am in a pickle because I do not know what name he fought under. Many young Jewish fighters changed the names that they boxed with, as I think even the not Jewish boxers did, so it gets confusing. I have seen enough photographs of him to be able to identify him, though all of the pictures that I know of him are of him in middle age or later. I have a feeling that he might have been so fond of his handlebar mustache as it was the last vestige from his boxing days. I'd wager he has one in any photos, though I think many men did, it is one of the few clues I have. My grandmother, who is still alive and with it, says that at one point he was the Welterweight Champion of Scotland, but I couldn't find any records that go that far back online. I am in the United States. Any and all help much appreciated. :-)

One more thing, my grandmother was born in 1915 and is the youngest of six. I know that his boxing days were before he was married and had children, so I am really just guessing as to the dates of his career. It might be even earlier, by how much I don't know. I do have a copy of his birth certificate somewhere, but it's deep in a box. Maybe he boxed in the 1890's?

Hello to Mike Izzard, Are you Mike from Australia ? If so we have contacted each other years ago. Ernie Izzard was also my great Uncle, Joe Izzard being my grandad, and I remember him well as a young lad, he use to call me ' boy ' and would square up to me and say " keep your guard up boy ! " he had massive , shovel-like hands as I remember, he used to live with my Mum and Joe sadly he ended his life in Bexley mental hospital as too many blows to the head made him 'punchy ' but I have a few tales of when he went prize-fighting

Where should I look for a welterweight champion of Scotland in the 1890’s? There are recordsfrom after that time, but not much before. The more I read, the more I’m convinced that he used a “ moniker” of some type, since it seems like most boxers did. Names like Kid and Mack and so on. Plus I know Jewish boxers probably anglicized their names a bit, in Edinburgh? Just guessing. Knowing that he changed his real name legally, after WW1, it’s not a far stretch to think he used a different name in the ring? I especially wonder which gyms to look into. I don’t know the names to even search, since I’m American. My grandmother swam at Warrenders, but that is unrelated and long after his title. I know that he was titled, welterweight champion of Scotland, but no idea of his name, or which year in the 1890’s that it was, but I’m thinking after1895,based on my great uncle Harry’s birth. I know it wasn’t long after his title that he settled down and I think that his first child was born in 1904/5? I’m really guessing at the time window, but someone out there must know the best boxing clubs in Edinburgh at that time? Especially the Hewish ones? I imagine he was a very tough guy. He fought off a mugger on a visit to NYC in the 1950’s and he was in his 60’s then. So, he was tough. He kept his signature mustache and bowler hat all his life.
